Celebrate Diversity in Literature With the African American Read-in at SML

Can you remember your all-time favorite book? The book that you just could not put down until it was finished? Now imagine that someone somewhere decided that that book was not appropriate for you to read and banned that book so that you and others could no longer enjoy it. We have heard much about attempts to ban books and challenge materials in libraries and at schools in recent months. However, libraries are places where all voices, views and schools of thought are welcome, and we try very hard to reflect that beautiful diversity in our library collections so that there truly is something for everyone at the library. This February, Shreve Memorial Library is inviting all to celebrate diversity in literature by participating in the African American Read-In as part of the library’s Black History Month celebration.

He will be enshrined with Fred McGriff, who was previously elected by the Era Committee. Rolen received 76.3% of votes cast, just above the 75% required for induction. A few players fell just short this year, namely Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton with 72.2%, closer Billy Wagner with 68.1% and long-time Atlanta Braves centerfielder Andruw Jones with 58.1%.

Once a Burned Building, Now an Empty Lot in Downtown Shreveport

DDA Director Liz Swaine is fond of saying people don't come downtown to look at empty lots. It’s a true statement, but people also do not come downtown to look at burned buildings. Last September, the building at 114 Texas, the one with the crashed-in roof and falling walls, burned in a massive fire. What was left was even more of a mess than the falling-down structure that had plagued the city for many years.
