Cleveland Indians to be named Guardians

The continued effort of all sports franchises to distance themselves from any reference to Native Americans continued as the Cleveland Indians announced that starting in 2022, they will now be known as the Cleveland Guardians. While those of us not from the Cleveland area have no idea why they would change to the Guardians, there actually is a good reason for the name selection.

2021 Preseason Media All-SEC Football Team

On Monday the media released their 2021 All-SEC Football Team first, second and third teams. The LSU Tigers have a total of seven players selected across the three teams. Alabama leads the way with 16 players selected, followed by Georgia (12), Auburn (11), LSU (7), Texas A&M (6), Arkansas (5), Kentucky (5), Ole Miss (5), Florida (4), Tennessee (3), South Carolina (3), Missouri (2) and Mississippi State (1). Vanderbilt did not receive a vote for any of their players. The Tigers selected are as follows.

Packers and Aaron Rodgers (finally) come to terms

After what seems like a year’s worth of back and forth between reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers over his contract and his general disdain for basically all personnel decisions made by Packers brass, the Packers and their starting QB have come to terms on a new deal. Reports started circulating Monday morning around the league that Rodgers would report to camp and planned to play this season for the Packers. Reports in April by ESPN NFL analyst Adam Schefter indicated that Rodgers did not want to return to the team. Rodgers skipped the organization’s team activities and mandatory minicamp earlier this offseason. Rogers also reportedly turned down a two-year contract extension that would have made him the highest-paid player in the NFL. The reported contract details are that there will be language put into Rodgers’ contract that will allow him the opportunity to look for another team or retire after this season. The Packers get their guy back, he gets more say regarding his future in Green Bay, and the NFL has one more season of the Rodgers-led Packers contending for a Super Bowl. Win-win-win.

Texas and Oklahoma, two of the founding members of the Big 12, set to leave conference

In a move that shook college football to its core, Texas and Oklahoma announced their plans to leave the Big 12 last week. While some will say they saw this coming, most of us never thought it would actually happen (me included). They intend upon not renewing their contracts once they expire in 2024-25. Their presumed landing spot, the SEC, would expand to 16 teams. While the expansion of teams hasn’t been formally announced as of yet, the speculation as to how the league will look has definitely begun. The addition of two teams from the West area would shake up the SEC West. Below is how I think things will look once both teams are formally announced as new members of the SEC.
