Proposed Amazon TIF District needs careful review by Caddo Commission

Caddo Commissioner Steven Jackson placed on the Caddo Commission Aug. 19 agenda an ordinance to create the North Caddo Economic Development District, which would be a Tax Incentive Financing (TIF) District. The purpose of this district is to allow incremental increases in sales taxes, property taxes and hotel occupancy taxes to be separately deposited and then “loaned, donated or pledged in furtherance of economic development projects” as defined by state statute.

JUNIOR LEAGUE NOTES

In a recent issue of the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier magazine, there were short biographies of the 2021/2022 board members. Included were “fun facts” about the personalities. Capturing our attention: Courtney McBee, nominating chairperson: “I have a bachelor’s degree in Latin”; Carolyn Murphy Thompson, project research and development: “I have visited all 50 states” ; Chelsea Adcock, member-at-large: “I completed a marathon in Antarctica”; Alex Person, member-at-large: “I once snuck into a Black-Eyed Peas concert”; Stephanie Foster, assistant treasurer: “I married my high school sweetheart”; Kirsten Shrewsberry, communications vice president: “I’ve visited more than 50 countries”; Ali Smith, fund development veep: “ I can sing the states in alphabetical order!”

DOTS & DASHES

We had to regret, but imagine there were tears July 18 when First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport members sent Pastor Chris Currie and his family -- Stephanie, Thomas, Harrison and Corinne -- off to New Orleans with a reception after church services. Currie, well known for leading the church in community service through COVID-19 pandemic, has been here eight years. But, he is off on a new adventure. He will be pastor/head of staff at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in the silk stocking district of New Orleans. Perhaps staff committee member Betty Henderson said it best in a letter to church members: “We will miss this wonderful family, but remain blessed that we enjoyed their prayers, support in personal struggles and leadership during this time of stress in our lives here and around the globe.” ... The July/August issue of Reader’s Digest special section listed “The Best Dessert in Every State.” The envelope, please: Louisiana? Beignets. Arkansas? Chocolate rolls. (Buttery dough is stuffed with cocoa powder and sugar.) Texas? Pecan pie. No explanation necessary. ... There can be no calling card more special or elegant than artist Ron Smith’s. The oversized card features photos of a piano, a vintage country church and a piece of art imprinted on black stock. And, says, “RonSmithArt: Remember. Dream. Inspire.” Thanks, Ron for reminding us what is important in life. ... Thanks to the wait staffer at Merci Beaucoups, Natchitoches. She wrote, “God Bless” on checks she handed us after lunch there one hot, summer day. ... When local coffee shops are mentioned, Shreveport’s Rhino Coffee is usually at the top of the list. The company received national recognition in the September issue of Southern Living-Southwest Edition. Both uptown and downtown locations were mentioned in “The South’s Best Coffee Shops.” The segment especially hailed a community table for six: “(It) facilitates conversation and encourages you to make new friends.” (As the song goes, “But keep the old. One is silver, the other gold.”)
