Mayoral and city council pay should be raised

Mayoral and city council pay should be raised

The 1978 Shreveport City Charter contains the many aspects by which our city is governed. Among them are the salaries of the mayor and of the city council. Sections 2-28 and 2-29 address the salaries of the mayor and the city council, respectively. Ordinance #84 of 1990 raised the mayor's pay. A companion, Ordinance #85 of 1990, raised the pay of the seven council members. Ordinances #60 and #61 of 2002 hiked the salary of the mayor and the city council, respectively. There were12-year gaps twice: from the initial salaries to 1990, and again from then to the current salaries with a current gap of 20 years.

Mourning a child gone too soon

When my grandmother died, she was known as “Purple” Perkins. She wore the color lavender every day. She said she wore lavender because, growing up in a large Roman Catholic family in the 1890s, someone was always dying. They followed the custom of the time and wore black for what seemed like a month, she said. That included a black wreath on the front door to let everyone know they were in mourning. Then came 60 days of wearing lavender clothes. Cora had a lot of lavender in her closet.

Landry Anglin was not the first child killed in Shreveport by a stray bullet from lawless and violent criminals, but she is the latest. And although some people want to make the race of the victim an issue, those people are wrong. The race of the victim should not be something that people are focused on. Everything just can’t be about race. It doesn’t matter, nor should it.

Jim’s Wife: Marriage, after all this time

Jim’s Wife: Marriage, after all this time

Not long ago I saw a cartoon about the difference in being a newlywed and being married for 10 years. In it the newlyweds were sitting in a crowd looking into each other’s eyes, and the long-married couple were reading their phones not paying each other any attention. I got to thinking that it is so true, what you believe marriage will be like in the beginning to what it evolves into.

Lies, lies and more lies

Lies, lies and more lies

What new and innovative lie will tinkle the ears of the voters this time? Will it be that traditional lie: “Vote for me, and I’ll set you free”? What will the new lie be that entices you or even me to support a position that never demonstrates you or me?
