Benton Middle principal extends thanks for support

During the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 11, devastating storms ripped through our region, causing incredible destruction that resulted in damaged homes, businesses and, tragically, loss of life. Our thoughts continue to be with those who mourn and rebuild. Unfortunately, Benton Middle School was not left unscathed. Straight line winds estimated at nearly 110 miles per hour peeled the roof off of the sixthgrade wing, resulting in the total loss of seven classrooms and ultimately displac-ing 10 teachers and approximately 200 students.

Bossier and the Cult of Growth

When I was growing up north of Bossier City, there were two main roads: Benton and Airline. Today, the area has soaked up most of Bossier’s recent population growth. North of I-220, developers have built thousands of homes, hundreds of apartments, dozens of shops and a major shopping center. But the key roads are more or less the same. If you’ve tried to navigate the area around the interstate during weekdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., you know what the result has been. According to my calculations from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, traffic in the area is up 30% from 2001. When the traffic inevitably causes a wreck, things get exponentially worse.
