Bossier and the Cult of Growth

When I was growing up north of Bossier City, there were two main roads: Benton and Airline. Today, the area has soaked up most of Bossier’s recent population growth. North of I-220, developers have built thousands of homes, hundreds of apartments, dozens of shops and a major shopping center. But the key roads are more or less the same. If you’ve tried to navigate the area around the interstate during weekdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., you know what the result has been. According to my calculations from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, traffic in the area is up 30% from 2001. When the traffic inevitably causes a wreck, things get exponentially worse.
