After a decade-long hiatus, Artport is set to return in the summer of 2025, bringing fresh energy to the beloved revolving art show series displayed at Shreveport Regional Airport. In 1990, the Shreveport Regional Airport Beautification Committee sought insight and talent from a local artist and agency owner, Lewis Kalmbach. The now late Lewis Kalmbach and Laura Noland Harter founded Artport to showcase original artwork from 100 local and regional artists in a rotating display. The Artport initiative transformed the airport into a vibrant art gallery. The inaugural event featured 114 artists and a philanthropic auction that benefited the Philadelphia Center in its fight against AIDS.

I was raised in northeastern Pennsylvania and graduated with honors from Bloomsburg University with a BA in Communications/Journalism.

It’s like a never ending nightmare for William Daniel, Director of Shreveport's Water and Sewage Department (DOWUS)--trying to get Shreveport water to taste 'right' and to look 'right'. Daniel often talks of the steps DOWUS takes to 'make water'. Lately, making good tasting, clear water has been a major headache for Daniel and his staff. Yellowish/greenish, funny tasting water became a problem several weeks ago. After consultation with experts and additional testing the culprit was identified--too much manganese in the water. Actually, it is too much manganese in the city's water supply--Cross Lake. In recent month the manganese levels in Cross Lake began to rise. This resulted in water being yellowish or greenish coming out of the taps, along with a 'funny' taste. Heavy rainfall in early June was identified as a possible culprit, either creating more runoff into the lake and/or an upheaval in the lake's water from the lower levels to higher levels. DOWUS tried flushing the water lines to remove the water overloaded with dissolved manganese to no avail. The amount of manganese coming into the treatment plan from Cross Lake did not abate. DOWUS then tried treating the water with a different chemical to dissolve the manganese. Although this was somewhat helpful the underlying problem of too much manganese was not resolved.
