Expectations. Should we have them? Isn’t it setting us up for disappointment?

Sports

In the case of the LSU Tigers and pretty much all sports, expectations are as risky as gas station sushi. In my prediction piece on the LSU season, I asked the question, 'Do you think this team can finish the regular season undefeated?” To which I wrote, “I do.” I married myself to my expectations for a team I hadn’t seen lay together. I was willing to dream and put what I expected to happen in writing. I had this to say about the Seminole game: “Like last season, the Tigers will begin their year with a game against the Florida State Seminoles. This time, however, I don’t anticipate the Tigers losing to the Noles like they did last year, 24-23. I look for the Tigers to avenge that loss with a victory to start the season 1-0. Coach Brian Kelly leading up to the game said, 'We’re gonna go beat the heck out of Florida State.'' Sunday night on primetime, it was those Florida State Seminoles versus the LSU Tigers. Both teams started off sound, going back and forth for the first half with LSU up 17-14 heading into halftime. At this point, Coach tells his team what he expects in the second half. We talk over our nachos exactly how we expect the rest of the game to go. Our expectations were way off as Florida State scored 31 unanswered points in the second half. Jordan Travis, their “Heisman Candidate” quarterback finished the game with 342 yards passing and five total touchdowns. He led his team to a 45-24 win and a bitter pill for Tiger fans to swallow.

Jack Smith makes his mark in the world of golf!

For golfers, that feeling of the “perfect” never loses its luster. The first time you manage to hit the ball straight, flush and right down the fairway you could probably quit golf right then and there and proclaim yourself the greatest ever, it feels that good. If you’ve ever played sports, you know the feeling. It’s like a nothing but net three, squaring up the baseball or softball and barely feeling the homer you just hit or the perfect spiral. Jack Smith is experiencing that feeling in a big way these days.

It's beginning to look a lot like pre-pandemic! These are the exact sentiments of Louisiana Downs president Kevin Preston while he anticipated an action-packed day for the 41st Super Derby! 11 a.m. and the crowd draws in under the beaming sun as jockeys prepare their race horses for what is to be a spectacular occasion. Preston raves, 'Almost 50 years of this iconic track, we're excited to have the first derby since COVID-19 hit!' Ladies and little girls all wore their nicest derby hats while the guys, including myself, sported sleek boots for the day's festivities! Kicking off at 2:05 p.m., several horses alongside their jockeys graced the Louisiana Downs in hopes for the Super Derby 41 winning title. Yes Bab, Diablo Cat, Runaway Samurai and Our Freddie Mac, as well as other race horses, all showed up and showed out, but it was jockey Emisael Jaramillo and Big Data who stole the show and left as the official winner.

Jones Withdraws From District 6 Commission Race!

Jones Withdraws From District 6 Commission Race!

Caddo Parish Commissioner Steffon Jones will no longer serve on the parish governing body effective Jan. 8. Jones agreed during a court hearing Friday morning to withdraw his candidacy because of unpaid ethics fines. He had been unopposed for District 6 seat. However, Jones is eligible to run again. He paid the $5,000 owed to the Louisiana Board of Ethics, which was the reason he was disqualified from the Oct. 14 election. Jones was appointed in November 2021 as an interim commissioner to fill the unexpired term of former Commissioner Lynn Cawthorne, who was forced to resign because of a federal conviction.
