Panola County Sheriff's Deputy killed during traffic stop; suspect captured in Shreveport
A Shreveport man is behind bars this morning charged in connection with the shooting of a Panola County Sheriff's Deputy.
Gregory Newson, 45, is currently being held in the Shreveport city jail on charges of flight from an officer and a fugitive warrant from Texas, charging him with capital murder of a police officer.
Newson was taken into custody by Shreveport police around 3 a.m, Tuesday morning, following a brief foot chase, in West Shreveport. Officers had attempted to stop Newson's vehicle before it crashed and Newson then fled on foot.
According to reports, around 2 a.m., a Panola Sheriff's Deputy radioed in about a traffic stop on FM 10, south of Carthage Texas. A few minutes later, radio traffic was received from a civilian that gunshots had been heard and the deputy was laying the middle of the road. The deputy was transported to UT Carthage where he died a short time later.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the case and Newson will be extradited back to Texas.
