2019 Heritage & Harvest Tour to be held on Saturday, Sept. 28

Annual event will spotlight more than 15 historic stops including homes, churches, and other attractions along Highway 71 North and Highway 3049 in northern Caddo Parish

SHREVEPORT, LA – The Red River Crossroads Historical & Cultural Association will present the 2019 Heritage & Harvest Tour, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, north of Shreveport along LA Highway 3049 and U.S. Highway 71 North. Local residents and visitors are invited to spend a day in the country exploring the history and culture of Dixie, Belcher, Gilliam, Hosston, Mira and Ida. This self-driving tour has high scenic value and more than 15 historic stops including personal homes, long-standing churches, and low-key attractions. The two homes along the 2019 Heritage and Harvest Tour are the The Lynn Plantation Home, located at 11569 Highway 3049 in Belcher and The Reuben T. Douglas House, located at 128855 Adger Road in Gilliam. The Lynn Plantation Home was built in 1928, where the original plantation headquarters included a cotton gin, blacksmith shop, tenant shop and more. The Reuben T. Douglas House was built by Reuben T. Douglas and his wife in 1910 after it was destroyed by the 1908 cyclone that wiped out many other homes and establishments in Gilliam.

 

Other historic stops along the Heritage and Harvest Tour include Ebenezer Baptist Church, Belcher Veterans Memorial, Red River Crossroads Museum, James Country Store, Old Hosston School, Big Mama’s Antiques and Restorations, and Designs by Carol Quilt Shop, The Dixie Gin, and more.

 

In addition to historic tours, the 2019 Heritage & Harvest Tour will offer interactive experiences and lunch at select attractions and restaurants along the route. The Red River Crossroads Museum will feature a Sarepta Brown Cotton Exhibit led by Tony Mullin, where he will demonstrate the early process of hand ginning and cotton spinning using cotton grown in Sarepta, Louisiana. Visitors can enjoy lunch specials at Main Street Restaurant or stop by James Country Store to purchase an assortment of drinks and snacks.

 

Home tour tickets are $10 and can be purchased at The Lynn Plantation Home or The Reuben T. Douglas House. The 2019 Heritage and Harvest Tour brochure containing a map of the route, as well as a complete list of participating businesses and attractions, can be picked up at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau, located at 601 Spring Street in downtown Shreveport, as well as Belcher Presbyterian Church, Red River Crossroads Museum, and the homes on tour.
