Storied Benton High Basketball Coach Stepping Down!

In a tearful team meeting this afternoon, Benton High Girls Basketball Coach Mary Ward announced that she is stepping down from coaching after an 18-year run that led the Lady Tigers to state championships and an incredible record. Ward has been a fixture in girls’ basketball from the time she played for Airline High School, Baylor, and Tulane University, where she was enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Ward then moved into coaching nearly decades ago at Benton High, where she recently celebrated her 400th win. “The memories created, the relationships made, and the lessons learned on and off the court will forever hold a special place in my heart,” Ward said. “I am grateful for the dedication of my coaching staff and the exceptional talents of the student-athletes who have graced our team. Together, we have achieved milestones such as a state championship, two state runner-up titles, four appearances in the Final Four and an overall record of 400-207.”
