One week ago, parish police jury highway department crews were working around the clock to remove trees and debris blocking roadways in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. Although Laura has gone, her destruction is still evident.

Most people want to work and have a good job, because there is dignity in work, and a $600 unemployment stipend does not take away their desire to work. Many of them are proud to have a decent-paying job. So many people work and toil in the labor force for 30 or 40 years with the understanding that no one was going to give them anything. They knew they were going to have to for it, regardless of whether there was a lot of money or not, and most of the time it was not.
