Port of Caddo-Bossier reaches barge milestone

The Port of Caddo-Bossier marked a major milestone over the weekend. Port employees offloaded the 200th barge carrying steel coils for Vulcraft-Texas a division of Nucor. Barges containing steel coils began arriving from Nucor’s Blytheville, Ark., facility in May 2017. The steel coils are offloaded at the Port of Caddo-Bossier and transferred to trucks, which carry them to the company’s plant in Grapeland, Texas, which is just south of Tyler. Nucor was able to reduce transportation costs by using the Port, instead of trucking the coils between its two facilities.

Sounds ominous, doesn’t it? I felt like there should be some dramatic music playing afterwards. While some teams have nothing to worry about because they’re already “in,” there are a number of teams who will find themselves on the outside looking in once the super conference dust settles. There are a few options that have been discussed but I think the model I am more inclined to see happen would be two super conferences, made up of 24 teams apiece and then a “group of five” type grouping of schools that just missed out on the 48 teams in.

The School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) at LSU Health Shreveport is wrapping up their second session of AHEAD - Allied Health Education and Discovery (AHEAD). This free, five-day program allows Louisiana high school students to participate in a week of education about the potential health-care career paths available at the LSU Health Shreveport School of Allied Health Professions and other locations in the community. The week includes spotlights for careers such as occupational therapist, physical therapist, physician assistant, nursing, respiratory therapist, medical laboratory scientist and speech-language pathologist. A second week of AHEAD, which double the number of participants, was added this year after the interest and success of the inaugural program in 2021.

Balloon Rally held at Brookshire Grocery Arena

The Red River Balloon Rally was held again this year at the Brookshire Grocery Arena. The event was sponsored by Center- Point Energy and the Louisiana Office of Tourism. The colorful hot air balloons are observed in Shreveport and Bossier for the entire week of the festival. Large crowds attended this familyfriendly event which featured kid zones, tethered balloon rides and great entertainment for all ages.
