The Louisiana Film Prize HERstorically Wraps up Year 12!

The Louisiana Film Prize HERstorically Wraps up Year 12!

Viva la history! This year's Louisiana Film Prize was yet another success, but with barrier-breaking results. The most attendee turnout in its 12 years of operating, the highest number of film entries and the winner being the first black woman ever to claim the title! Catching up with Monique Derouselle was not only a treat, but an inspirational conversation. ' I want everyone to know that this is not an overnight success, but it was 10 years in the making,' the 2023 LAFP champ stated. Having graduated from California State with a Master of Fine Arts in film in 2013, Derouselle moved back to Louisiana soon after to begin her journey of field experience and putting her 'movie pen' to real work! Derouselle goes on to explain,'I have been working on my craft, writing several projects, making skits, meeting and learning from talented people and soaking up everything I could to get to this point.' The point she is referring to has cemented her as a LAFP legend by way of the afro-fantasy comedy 'The Candy Lady'! The winning short is about a woman whose magical typewriting actually brought stories to life. Exciting, eye-catching and whimsical, 'The Candy Lady' was a brilliant contrast to the other entries. ' I haven’t seen anything like this with black leads and I wanted to showcase that black people can be in fantasy and sci-fi films too,' proclaimed the 'Candy Lady' director. The film contest as well as the entire Prize community is a loving, active playing field where art, creativity and camaraderie dominates. That notion rings especially true for the Film Prize as 'this is a friendly competition where, yes, everyone wants to win first place, but are genuinely happy and excited for their favorite films that aren’t their own. We are rooting for each other one way or another,' says Derouselle.
