As concern for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak continues to grow, Shreve Memorial Library is taking precautionary steps to ensure the safety of patrons and to help prevent the spread of the disease in the libraries. Effective Friday, March 13, the library will suspend several services including programs, outreach events, and mobile library service.

“Because libraries are public spaces, we are taking very serious the concerns being raised surrounding the novel coronavirus, and we are taking all of the necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of this disease in our libraries,” stated John Tuggle, Shreve Memorial Library Executive Director. “The safety and well-being of our patrons and our library staff are of utmost concern. Therefore, we are proactively canceling programs and large gatherings to reduce the risk of exposure to those who may be sick.”

Effective Friday, March 13, all library programs will be canceled until further notice. This includes story times, craft programs, movie screenings, workshops, classes, book signings, and after school programs. In addition, all use of the libraries’ meeting rooms have been canceled. Mobile library service will also be suspended until further notice.

Patrons will still be able to visit and use the libraries to check out materials, use computers, and study for homework assignments. In addition, patrons are encouraged to utilize Shreve Memorial Library’s e-Branch to access services such as Hoopla, Overdrive, Flipster and Libby to download audiobooks, ebooks, magazines and videos and to stream music. Library cardholders can also access the Louisiana State Library Database through the e-Branch for access to Homework Louisiana, Pronunciator, and other school, career, and research databases.

“We are doing everything we can to help stem the spread of this disease in the libraries,” added Tuggle. “Library staff are encouraged to stay home if they are sick, and we are regularly disinfecting common areas and points of service.”
