The 8-year-old cockatoo Poppy almost stole the show at Barkus “Unleash the Decades” Royalty Announcement Party. Tracy Mendell brought Poppy, a therapy bird who loves to talk, to Barkus, which among Mardi Gras in the Ark-La-Tex krewes is referred to as “the animal krewe.”

Although Academy Award winner William Joyce’s film exhibit showed how a film is made, Joyce and bride Hilary Wooley spent much of the evening down the street at Robinson Film Center, where his newest short film, “Mr. Spam Gets a New Hat,” was being screened every 30 minutes. Joyce, artspace artistic director, spoke to viewers in advance of the half-hour showings at Robinson from 5:30 to 9 p.m., and later did make an appearance at artspace. (The show includes the first sketch of Mr. Spam done on a gumbo-stained Cush’s Grocery paper tablecloth to a world-wide collaboration.)

“This is a wonderful event ... This is good times for everybody,” said David Bailey as he looked out on the crowd partying July 24 in front of artspace and praised the music, the sponsors, and, most important of all, the comaraderie. “We are better together than we are apart.”
