Schools compete in “Mock Trial” competition
On Feb. 1, students from several high schools including Caddo Magnet, Huntington and (pictured here) Loyola College Prep, gathered to compete in the Region 1 Mock Trial Competition. The United States Federal Court, Western District of Louisiana, welcomed participants at the stunning courthouse in downtown Shreveport. Local judges and lawyers volunteered by coaching their teams, acting as members of the jury and even residing as judges during the competition. Student attorneys studied a factual pattern based on a fictitious criminal act. They worked hard for several months preparing for both a defense for the fictional criminal defendant and to prosecute. Depending on whose side they were on, student attorneys followed rules of evidence to prove either guilt or cast doubt. They took turns as witnesses and, very true to real court, had to think on their feet with unexpected questions from the other student attorneys and witnesses. Caddo Magnet took first place, and all of the students should be proud of their outstanding performances.
