SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY CELEBRATES TEENTOBER

This October, Shreve Memorial Library is participating in the Young Adult Library Services Association’s (YALSA) annual TeenTober celebration. Developed by YALSA, this month-long event strives to raise awareness of the importance of year-round teen services and connect teens with services and materials provided by their local institutions that will help them develop new skills and fuel their passions. TeenTober merges YALSA’s successful and long-standing Teen Tech Week and Teen Read Week initiatives into one program to celebrate teen services in libraries and enhance relationships with community partners.Throughout the month of October, Shreve Memorial Library branches will host a wide variety of TeenTober programs, giving teens an opportunity to learn more about library services and programs for teens, enjoy cool tech programs and crafts, and have fun with others at the library. Teens will learn things such as how to do basic computer coding using binary code, Scratch and Python, how to improve their social media presence and online communications, how to build an electrical circuit with LED lights, and how to harness solar energy to illuminate dark spaces. Teens will also have an opportunity to compete in teen game nights, video game tournaments, art workshops, and teen book clubs. All programs are free and open to the public; however, programs are designed for teens ages 12 – 18. Registration may be required for some programs. While TeenTober takes place in October, teen programs are available at Shreve Memorial Library branches year-round. Several library branches, including the Broadmoor, Hamilton/South Caddo, Hollywood/Union Avenue, North Caddo and North Shreveport Branches, have weekly “Teen Time” or “Teen Space” programs that provide teens and tweens an opportunity to learn more about library services, explore new hobbies and interests with their peers, and share their thoughts and ideas with other teens. “Teen Time” programs feature everything from game play to homework help, movie screening and book discussions to hands-on STEAM activities. For a complete list of TeenTober events and regularly scheduled teen programs at Shreve Memorial Library branches, be sure to visit www.shreve-lib.org.
