Bossier Community Donates to Parish Food Bank Program

The residents at Willow Lake Adult Community give each Christmas season to Operation Blessing, the parish food bank program operated by the Bossier Sheriff’s Office.  But during the Coronavirus pandemic, they decided to donate even a little more.

Last week, the Willow Lake Neighborhood Group donated $500 to Operation Blessing, so that they could help feed families in need during this crisis.  They felt that wasn’t enough, so they collected more money and presented another $250 donation to Operation Blessing Thursday morning.”

“It makes me feel wonderful to live in a neighborhood that will do something like this,” said Don Mason of the neighborhood group.

Operation Blessing typically provides food to about 80 families each week.  During the Coronavirus crisis, the food bank program has added a few more families to support.  And that’s just the reason Mason and Willow Lake wanted to make the donation.

“I’ve been pretty blessed in my life, never gone hungry, and I don’t want anybody else to,” said Mason.  “That’s the prevalent attitude in our neighborhood.”

Neighborhood volunteers also spent a few days sowing special masks for the senior residents.  Mason said he had a simple message of gratitude for them – “Thank you, ladies!”

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington has seen just how beneficial the food bank program, Operation Blessing, has been over the years for the elderly and those in need here in Bossier Parish.   It’s run on private donations, just like the one from Willow Lake.

“I am so appreciative of the fine folks of Willow Lake and their support of our food bank program,” said Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington.  “Their generosity to help others is another great example of why Bossier Parish is a great place to live and serve.”

Just this week, there were also other donations from private individuals and organizations to support Operation Blessing.  If you would like to help, please contact the Viking Drive Substation at (318) 965-3500.
